5 GYERS - ILLUSTRATED ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN POSTERS

5 Gyers is a non-profit organization that focuses their efforts on the the biggest plastic waste areas in the oceans, known as the 5 subtropical gyers. The organization was created to help research the gyers and come up with new solutions of trying to decrease the plastic pollution.

Due to most of our audience already knowing that our plastic waste is harmful to the sea life, we needed a different approach to spread awareness and get more people to feel the need to volunteer. The illustrations needed to be shocking to evoke emotions, but could still be easy to read through all different types of audiences viewing these posters.

The idea of using an x-ray of a sea animal who has already died from digesting plastic waste and showing a prominent 'Thank You' bag throughout each one, creates more emotion for the posters. The 'Thank You' bag connects the viewers to these animals because the bag is a symbol of consumerism and the industrialization of buying products. The phrase 'Thank You' has such a positive meaning, but viewed in this way, the audience should feel as if they were the ones who caused the plastic waste and the outcome of these animals.

Keeping with the usual x-ray colors, the illustration shows the animal's skeleton, outline of body, and 5 pieces of plastic waste spread throughout the animal.
